Send WordPress email through Amazon SES

Amazon Simple Email Service is built for volume and priced per message, which makes it a strong fit for stores, membership sites and anything that sends a lot. BooleanSMTP can send over the SES API, so no SMTP port has to be open on your server, or over SMTP.

How BooleanSMTP sends through Amazon SES

SMTP

BooleanSMTP connects to the provider’s SMTP server with the details below and sends through PHPMailer, the library WordPress itself uses.

The connection asks for

  • SMTP Region
  • SMTP Username
  • SMTP Password

Plus the From address and name every connection has.

HTTP API

BooleanSMTP sends over Amazon SES’s HTTPS API instead of SMTP, so no SMTP port has to be open on your server.

The connection asks for

  • API Region
  • API Access Key ID
  • API Secret Access Key

Plus the From address and name every connection has.

Before you connect

Verify your sending domain or address in SES and move the account out of the sandbox for real traffic. For the API, create an IAM access key with permission to send; for SMTP, create SES SMTP credentials. Both are tied to a region you pick in the connection.

Setup guide: Amazon SES

Pair it with a fallback

SES is dependable, but an access key can be rotated or an account paused for review. A second provider as the fallback, such as Postmark or your Google Workspace account, keeps mail moving meanwhile.

When Amazon SES refuses a message, BooleanSMTP tries your fallback connection at once, logs which one delivered it, and alerts you on Slack, Discord or Telegram only if every attempt fails. See the whole path

What Amazon SES receives

Only what sending needs: each message (recipients, subject, body, headers, attachments) and the credentials you enter for the connection, sent to Amazon SES when WordPress sends an email. BooleanSMTP stores those credentials encrypted in your own database. Read Amazon SES’s terms and privacy policy.
